Medicare information

Medicare helps with the cost of health care and medicine and provides a number of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. Health professionals can access information for their clients and claim the rebates relevant to their professions.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a range of temporary Medicare item numbers for video and telehealth services were added for health professionals. An update from the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker Association (NATSIHWA) about these item numbers can be found here. There is also a COVID-19 Bulk Billed MBS Telehealth Services changes factsheet that can be downloaded here.

Medicare services include:

  • online submission of forms to Medicare
  • online education on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and education resources relevant to different professions
  • claiming under the MBS if services are bulk billing
  • Indigenous Access Program for health professionals
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Line
    • Voluntary Indigenous Identifier
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health education for health professionals – a range of guides are available to support health professionals providing support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander clients, these include:

We seek your assistance to fund this topic to support us in helping to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
