In-service training for remote primary health care workers in Australia: a novel and useful mode of education delivery (2012)

This poster was created for the Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) 2012 National Conference, 'Rural and Remote Practice: Totally Wild!'. The poster summaries the findings of a recent study conducted by the Brien Holden Vision Institute evaluating the usefulness and relevance of their eye health training programs for remote Primary Health Care Workers (PHCWs).

The poster contains:

  • a brief overview of the role of PHCWs in the provision of eye health services in remote communities
  • an outline of the implementation of the training program and methods used to evaluate its usefulness and relevance
  • the outcomes of the training program
  • a discussion of the studies relevance to training delivery for remote PHCWs.

The poster offers a useful summary of the implementation and evaluation of the Institute's training program for all those working in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander eye health policy and practice, in particular, those involved in training delivery to PHCWs.

Optometrists' experiences in short-term locum placements in remote Aboriginal community health centres (2012)

This poster was created for the Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) 2012 National Conference, 'Rural and Remote Practice: Totally Wild!'. The poster summaries the findings of a recent study conducted by the Brien Holden Vision Institute into the motivation, successes and challenges of locum optometrists working in remote Northern Territory (NT) communities on short-term placements, by analysing common themes in their pre- and post-trip feedback forms and questionnaires.

The poster contains:

  • a brief overview of eye health services available in remote communities in the NT
  • the methods used to collate and analyse the data from pre-existing forms and questionnaires
  • the results of the analysis, including the most commonly reported motivations given for wanting to participate, highlights and challenges
  • a discussion of the results outlining their relevance to the recruitment of locum practitioners.

The poster offers a useful summary of the Institute's analysis for all those working in Australian Indigenous eye health policy and practice, in particular, those involved in the recruitment of rural and remote practitioners.
