3M FASD Prevention Strategy: Marulu, Mass Media and Midwives
This program aims to implement and evaluate community designed Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevention strategies for the Fitzroy Valley and surrounding communities in Western Australia.
There are three elements to the program:
- Marulu – a high impact FASD prevention strategy in the communities of the Fitzroy Valley where a high incidence of FASD has been documented
- Midwives - a workforce intervention to up-skill midwives in the documentation and use of brief intervention around alcohol use in pregnancy
- Mass media – a mass media strategy targeting regional and remote communities throughout the Kimberley and Pilbara, with a further aim of ensuring the program and its message has a state-wide impact.
Partners in the research program are; Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services, Fitzroy Crossing, WA and Marninwarntikura Fitzroy Women’s Resource Centre, Fitzroy Crossing, WA.
