Big Rivers Waste Management Working Group

Description

The Big Rivers Waste Management Working Group was formed to assess how waste was being managed at landfills operated by three regional councils in the Northern Territory (NT). It also aims to provide expertise and support to improve operational practices for the betterment of communities and the environment.

The Working Group comprises representatives of Roper Gulf Regional Council, Victoria Daly Regional Council and West Daly Regional Council.

The Working Group was formed to address communities using outdated landfilling methods, which were often improperly designed, and didn't separate recyclables and hazardous materials. The group is additionally looking at ways for better resource recovery opportunities, such as making recycling financially viable.

The Working Group is funded by the NT Department of Health, the councils involved, and in-kind support from Katherine Town Council.
