$40,000 eye health scholarship opportunities

Date posted: 17 July 2017

Prospective eye health researchers are being encouraged to apply for University of New South Wales’s (UNSW) Scientia PhD scholarships at the School of Optometry and Visions Science (SOVS) and The George Institute for Global Health.

The scholarships provide a $40,000 tax-free annual stipend for four years, as well as up to $10,000 each year to assist with career-building and international research collaborations. They also cover tuition for the full four-year period, and include coaching and mentoring as part of a highly personalised career and leadership development plan.

Both SOVS and The George Institute have a structured postgraduate program consisting of in-house research seminars, which are designed to develop students methodological, statistical and research skills. They also allow access to the best researchers in Australia and internationally, who are willing to provide their expertise, knowledge, advice and guidance.

The scheme has been divided into five separate 'opportunities' that researchers can apply for:

  1. surgical and refractive management of cataract to minimise falls risk
  2. measuring the appropriateness of eyecare delivery in Australia
  3. improving outcomes by biosampling ocular surface disease
  4. nanodiagnosis of eye infections
  5. novel dual action antimicrobial coatings for biomedical applications.
  6. Applications close on Friday 21 July 2017.
