Kate Conigrave is a medical doctor with specialist qualifications in addiction medicine and in public health. She is primarily based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.

Kate’s work combines treating individuals with alcohol, drug and tobacco problems and working to improve health of whole communities through research and teaching.

As a Professor in Addiction Medicine at the University of Sydney’s Medical School, Kate is also involved in teaching a range of health professional students, including in medicine and public health, and a range of Aboriginal health staff.

Kate has worked in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and agencies in urban, regional and remote Australia over the past 15 years. This includes collaborations in research and in teaching for frontline workers and supporting communities in their work on reducing harms from substance use.

She was one of six editors of the Handbook of Aboriginal drug and alcohol work which was written to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals in this challenging field. She was also an editor of the book Addiction Medicine (now in its 2nd edition) to guide doctors and nurses in the alcohol and other drugs field.

Kate has a special interest in putting best evidence into day-to-day clinical practice and making health care for alcohol and drug problems more accessible.
