Professor John Spencer

John Spencer is Emeritus Professor of Population Oral Health and the former Director of the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health at the University of Adelaide. John has completed a Master’s of Public Health from the University of Michigan; a Master’s of Children’s and Preventative Dentistry from the University of Melbourne; and a PhD in Oral Epidemiology from University of Melbourne.

John has led Australia’s policy discussions on oral health and dental services and has also contributed to a range of national and international oral health policies. He contributed to the development of surveillance on oral health, dental services and the dental labour force in Australia for almost 25 years. The findings of this surveillance activity included documentation and analysis of oral diseases and dental service patterns by social characteristics in the Australian population. In 2012, John was the Deputy Chair National Advisory Council on Dental Health to the Australian Government’s Minister to Health.

John has particular expertise in the use and provision of services, dental labour force, fluoridation and dental policy. He is also interested in dental caries, oral health and quality of life and oral epidemiology.
